Somehow, I managed to raise a family of snackers. Including my husband. It didn’t take long for my willpower to go down the toilet as well. I was no longer a positive influence, and I certainly couldn’t live by the “do as I say, not as I do” expression. It just isn’t my style.

We needed a massive change. For my husband and I, it was imperative that we do something since we were the older ones in this situation and at this point these things would have more of an impact on our health.

For my kids, I wanted them to develop healthy habits, and understand the basis of nutrition and why it’s important. That was something that my husband never had, so it needed to start somewhere.

When I tell you that none of them were on board with my idea of healthier snacking, I mean that everyone was resistant and whiny about it and threatened to take away my role as grocery shopper for the family. Well, luckily for me none of my kids drive yet, and my husband hates grocery shopping. So they were stuck with me.

I did some research and compiled a ton of healthy recipes to try out. They ranged from different types of chips and dips, healthier versions of cookies, granola bars, various types of puddings, healthier versions of ice cream, and the list goes on and on.

I went ahead and made a bunch of them on a rainy Sunday afternoon. I froze the ice cream and bagged up the other snacks. We had an early dinner, then a taste testing of all of the new snacks.

I guess my kids and husband were surprised that they really liked most of the snacks that I made. I told them to pick out their favorites and I would add it to a regular snack rotation for them. The kids were so into it that they mentioned wanting to find recipes for us to try out as well. That was really exciting for me to hear.

We started making larger batches of things as my kids developed favorites, and we were getting to the point where we needed a bigger work bowl. I went on to KitchenWorksUSA to see what I could find. I was in luck. They sell the Cuisinart DLC-8 4-piece Tritan Bowl Kit part, which was exactly what I needed.

Now my kids and I work together to come up with different recipes, or ways to improve on some of the ones that we already make. It’s so nice to have the whole family involved in this venture. Everyone has increased energy and it’s had a great overall impact on my family. I highly recommend trying this out if you’re not sure how to handle unhealthy snacking habits.
